The most recent public meeting of the select committee on Jan. 6 went inside the White House to discuss the hours-long unwillingness of then-President Donald Trump to order a stop to the Capitol disturbance.

The committee’s initial conclusions from its inquiry into the uprising on January 6, 2021, were finally slated to be presented at the hearing in September.

The committee’s nine members—seven Democrats and two Republicans—have accused Trump of being at the epicenter of a complex plot to reverse his defeat to Biden in the 2020 election.

The panel focused on Trump’s inaction during a critical 187-minute period between the conclusion of his pre-riot rally near the White House and his eventual Twitter request for the mob to disperse by presenting audio and video evidence, as well as live testimony from two former White House officials.

A committee official told reporters on Wednesday that Trump could have been the “one person” with the authority to halt the invasion, but “he decided not to.”

The panel has left open the potential of arranging further hearings in the future as it continues to gather information and will publish a thorough report once its investigation is complete.
